Latino Heritage Preservation

Registration is now open!

Latino history in Oregon is long and deep. People of Latin American descent have impacted what Oregon has become through labor, community development, entrepreneurship, and more. Yet, this important history has been overlooked, under documented, and excluded from the shared narrative. Now many heritage organizations are working to change that.

Oregon Heritage, of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, is holding the Latino Heritage Preservation: Building a Network, a free online event April 29, 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. The goal is to kick-off a statewide conversation about coordinating efforts to preserve and promote Oregon’s Latino heritage.

Desiree Aranda and Sara Delgadillo Cruz, executive board members from Latin@s in Heritage Conservation will explore the breadth of Latino heritage and facilitate the session.

This session will discuss heritage conservation broadly, share a national approach to this work, and facilitate discussion about how we can coordinate to ensure Latino stories are being documented and shared throughout Oregon to preserve and promote Latino Heritage.

Learn about existing statewide resources and how to engage with them, including:

  • Oregon State University Oregon Multicultural Archives, Natalia Fernández

  • Latino Roots, University of Oregon, Gabriela Martinez and Lynn Stephen

  • Oregon Historical Society, Eliza Canty-Jones

Explore other networking models, including:

  • Women’s History Consortium, Jan Dilg and Kimberly Jensen

  • Oregon Folklife Network, Emily West Hartlerode

Everyone is welcome to join this FREE event. Share your experiences, challenges, and hopes for how Oregon can expand efforts to conserve and contribute to an inclusive American narrative.

This event is offered as a pre-session of the 2021 Oregon Heritage Summit, Collaboration is Key! For more information email Kuri Gill, call 503-383-6787, or visit www.oregonheritage.org.
